Background of the Study
The textile industry is one of the largest employers in Nigeria, providing jobs for thousands of workers. However, it is also one of the most hazardous industries due to exposure to heavy machinery, high noise levels, chemical dyes, and repetitive manual labor (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023). Workplace accidents in textile industries range from minor injuries such as cuts and bruises to severe incidents like machine entrapment and respiratory illnesses. In Kwara State, textile industries contribute significantly to economic growth, but reports suggest that workplace accidents remain a pressing issue. Research has indicated that factors such as inadequate protective equipment, lack of safety training, and poor maintenance of machines contribute to frequent workplace accidents (Adebayo, 2024). Understanding the common causes and nature of these accidents is critical for developing strategies to enhance worker safety.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing textile industry in Kwara State, workplace safety remains a challenge. Many textile workers are exposed to unsafe working conditions, leading to frequent accidents that affect both worker productivity and business operations. While safety regulations exist, enforcement is often weak, and workers may lack the necessary training to handle equipment safely. There is limited research documenting the types, frequency, and causes of workplace accidents in the textile sector in Kwara State. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the most common workplace accidents in textile industries and identifying measures for improving occupational safety.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the most common workplace accidents occurring in textile industries in Kwara State.
2. To examine the factors contributing to frequent workplace accidents in the textile sector.
3. To propose safety interventions that can reduce the incidence of workplace accidents in textile industries.
Research Questions
1. What are the most common workplace accidents in textile industries in Kwara State?
2. What factors contribute to the occurrence of these accidents?
3. What safety interventions can be implemented to minimize workplace accidents in textile industries?
Research Hypotheses
1. Poor machinery maintenance and inadequate protective equipment significantly contribute to workplace accidents in textile industries.
2. Workers with proper safety training experience fewer accidents compared to those without training.
3. Implementing strict safety regulations and training programs will lead to a decline in workplace accidents in textile industries.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on textile industries in Kwara State, analyzing accident records, workplace safety policies, and employee experiences. Limitations may include reluctance from industries to provide accident data and variations in safety practices across different textile firms.
